Bio

[ °1976 ]   Pierre-Philippe Hofmann lives in Brussels and works in Brussels and Switzerland

During his multidisciplinary studies in the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (Brussels), PP Hofmann followed the lessons given by Gilbert Fastenaekens. And there was a real compatibility between both photographic approaches. A strong link to the landscape, a fascination with slow processes, the permanent quest to accept reality as it presents itself to the viewer; these are some specifities they have in common. Hofmann' approach is also often linked to a more conceptual tradition and he also uses other mediums: for 'an hommage to Cézanne' he gathered dozens of sudoku games he filled in during 115 days, in reference to the 115 days the painter required to paint the portrait of the patron Ambroise Vollard. For another project, specially made for art fairs, Hofmann presents two original receipts on which we can vertically read Best price for you my friend (for example: B for 'Butter', E for 'Eggs', S for 'Spinach', T for 'Tomatoes',...). Humour is discreetly present in some of his works...

In the Stand By series, an everlasting work in progress, he is photographying what reality can spontaneously bring in a fixed frame. After having chosen a frame, he wait for hours things to happen inside it. Only one shot will be done, probably some banal events. Eloge des contingences volatiles, ce qu'on croise et qu'on ne regarde pas was recently presented at the Ferme-Asile in Sion.

Between 2003 and 2008, for 'Lieux Communs – Gemeenplaatsen' he was busy with a large photographic project and tried therefor to describe a whole territory, Belgium in this case, by a collection of approximatly 400 pictures of landscapes. All of them where actually taken on the linguistic border separating Flanders and Wallonia. A monography has been published in 2010. This work received several awards and was showed in Bozar (Palace of Fine Arts, Brussels).

Hofmann is developping a similar work in Switzerland at he moment, 'Portrait of a Landscape' walking through the country on 9 different straight lines, more than 1600km. The work, not ready before 2015, will be an installation for 45 screens.
